Dry Stone Walling

A "dry stone wall" is traditional barrier around fields and properties, a natural way to use the abundant stone in the brashy fields of the Cotswolds.

As the name suggests, Dry Stone Walls originally consist of dry stones - no mortar is used during the process of Dry Stone Walling, even for the footing, which is created out of large stones that are laid in a trench.

Nowadays, it is common to add mortar between the stones in order to protect the walls - especially around buildings - from exteriour influence such as being knocked over by cars or people walking over them. Mortar makes the walls more robust.

Heavy traffic can have an impact on the walls' longevity due to the vibrations.

Dry Stone Walls can still be created in its original form, without mortar, especially in fields where there is less impact from exteriour sources.
